Here in the U.S., we seem to love awards. Whether it’s the Grammys for the tunes that get us through Monday mornings or the Academy Awards for the cinema that moves us, we gather to celebrate the “best of the best.” We do it to be inspired, to witness excellence, and—let’s be honest—to see who wore it best (especially when it’s a recycled vintage gown).

But if we can throw a party for a three-hour epic movie, shouldn’t we throw one for the people literally saving our piece of the planet?

Enter: The “Oscars of Sustainability”

On March 25th, Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is rolling out the (upcycled) carpet for our 27th Annual Sustainability & Green Building Awards Celebration.

While there might be fewer paparazzi, the “stars” are just as bright. We’re honoring San Mateo County heroes who are moving the needle on the Three E’s: a healthy Environment, social Equity and Economic vitality.

Our 2026 “Leading Roles” go to:

  • Elaine Salinger: A powerhouse mentor with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby who transforms climate anxiety into political action, leading students from local marches all the way to the halls of Congress.
  • Peninsula Precious Plastics: Visionaries proving that a circular economy isn’t just a dream, but a reality.
  • JobTrain: Champions of economic mobility who are creating sustainable career paths for our community.
  • Chiara Luey: An incredible youth leader proving you’re never too young to be a clean-energy advocate.
