E-Waste Reduction for a Healthier Environment

Bottom Line: GreenCitizen is a company committed to creating a cleaner environment by addressing the growing electronic waste crisis.

E-waste is the fastest growing waste problem in the world. More than 400 million obsolete electronics are discarded in America every year1. Even when e-waste is collected for recycling in the United States, 50%-80% is eventually sent to Asia to be burned2. GreenCitizen is working to improve environmental quality and human health by reducing the amount of e-waste that is improperly disposed of overseas.

GreenCitizen collects e-waste through business pick-ups and community drop-off sites. Their locations throughout the Bay Area accept most e-waste related items and even items, such as Styrofoam, that other recyclers do not accept. The staff at the Eco-Centers, equipped with Environmental Science degrees, makes a point to educate visitors about the environmental and human health impacts of improperly recycled e-waste. Since 2004, GreenCitizen has prevented over 12,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions through its recycling program and maintained its guarantee that all items collected are reused or recycled responsibly.

The goal of GreenCitizen is to develop a sustainable metropolitan model that provides the most convenient and accountable ways for individuals and businesses to reuse and recycle electronics. They track all the items they receive, down to the serial number, to ensure that they are locally and responsibly reused or broken down for their raw materials. By recycling locally, GreenCitizen reduces the amount of pollution associated with transporting e-waste. GreenCitizen only works with E-Steward and R2 certified electronics recyclers. This guarantees that the materials they collect will be reused in the creation of new products, which simultaneously increases the supply of raw materials and reduces reliance on mining for new materials.

Take Action:

Electronic waste creates almost 70% of our nation’s toxic waste. Electronic equipment contains harmful toxins which, when released into the environment, can contaminate drinking water, soil, and the atmosphere.

GreenCitizen offers a variety of ways for individuals and businesses to reduce their e-waste footprint and create a cleaner environment:

Just to name a few!
